Irqah School for Girls

Irqah School for Girls

Riyadh, KSA

The Riyadh Najed Schools for Boys and Girls in Irqah is a testimony to deriving simplicity from complexities. The architectural narrative begins with a vision of simplicity and harmony, embodied through the use of linear elements. These lines are not mere design components but act as unifying threads that weave together the two distinct blocks of the school – one dedicated to classrooms and the other to the auditorium and sports complex.

The structure’s primary aesthetic is defined by grooves that traverse its facade, creating a rhythmic pattern that is both pleasing and functional. These grooves vary in width, offering a playful quality to the building’s exterior. The use of wider proportions in the grooves adds to the sense of whimsy, making the structure approachable and engaging for children. In the school architecture a key factor is for the structure to feel stable and grounded, this was tackled through design by providing a darker color to the ground floor as a unifying treatment in contrast to the rest of the structure. This change of material gives the structure a grounded feel and a sense of security.

Responding to the client’s request for irregular windows, the design incorporates a grid system where we reduce the appearance of different sized windows. This grid ensures visual coherence while allowing creative freedom. The windows punctuate the facade with varying widths, creating a dynamic visual experience. In the classroom block, windows are more frequent and varied to provide ample natural light and views, enhancing the learning environment. In contrast, the auditorium and sports block feature the same pattern in grooves and faux windows instead, to accommodate the dark requirements for these spaces.

The facade of the Irqah schools check off all the requirements of the Salmani code – making it the first school design proposal to 100% meet the code.
